THIRUVANANTHAPURAM/BENGALURU: With monsoon gaining strength in Kerala and neighbouring Karnataka, at least 13 people have died in rain-related incidents in both the states in the last 36 hours. While Kerala recorded six deaths on Tuesday, seven casualties were reported from Karnataka the day before.
Since July 31, as many as 12 monsoon-triggered deaths have been reported from Kerala, where 2,291 people have been shifted to 95 relief camps.
Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan urged all citizens, especially those in the northern districts, to maintain vigil as heavy rains have been predicted from Wednesday.
The highest number of relief camps have been opened in Kottayam (21), with 447 people taking shelter in these camps. The highest number of people shifting to relief camps is in Thrissur (657 in 15 camps). As many as 27 houses were completely damaged and 123 partially in the northern districts in the last two days. On Tuesday alone, 23 houses were fully damaged and 71 partially in the state.
Out of the six deaths recorded on Tuesday, three have been reported from Kannur. The district had registered landslides in Kanichar, which is in the hilly terrain of the district. A 3km stretch has been fully damaged along the Nedumpoyil-Mananthavady road, connecting Kannur and Wayanad.
The state disaster management authority has warned fishermen to not foray into the sea till August 4. It has also alerted the fisheries department and the coast guard to maintain extreme vigil. Waves of 3-3.3m in height have been predicted in the sea along the state’s shore.
In Karnataka, seven people, including two children, died as heavy rain lashed several districts of the state starting Monday, triggering landslides and flash-floods. The worst affected were Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Ballari and Davanagere districts, where rail connectivity was also affected. Met department has issued a yellow alert for three days in 12 districts of state.
