NEW DELHI: Describing ‘Agnipath’ as the third “major transformative reform” after the chief of defence post and corporatisation of the Ordnance Factory Board, defence minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said the new recruitment scheme was announced after wide-ranging consultations with the armed forces and ex-servicemen.
“The Agnipath scheme has brought a revolutionary change in the process of recruitment in the armed forces of this country,” Singh said, while adding that misunderstandings are being spread against it for political reasons. “Should we lower the morale of the soldiers of the country? This is not justice,” he said, while speaking at an event.

It has been announced that the Agniveers being demobilised after four years (75% from each batch) will be given give “priority” in the CAPFs, government departments, PSUs and other agencies.
“If they want to do any other work, then they will also be given the facility of loans at a cheaper rate (apart from Seva Nidhi exit package of Rs 11.71 lakh). Those youngsters who leave after serving in the military for four years will be known as Agniveers for life,” he said.
Singh also stressed that though the training period for the Agniveers has been reduced (from 9-11 months to six months), the “quality” won’t be compromised at any cost.
The scheme was announced after around two years of deliberations, including with the ex-servicemen community, and a decision was taken based on a consensus. “We wanted that there is a sense of discipline and pride for the country among the people,” Singh said.
