ANAKAPALLE: Over 50 women working at Quantum Seeds unit of Brandix India Apparel Company (BIAC), Atchutapuram in Anakapalle district, fell sick after inhaling some poisonous gas.
However, the origin of the gas and cause of the leak, have not yet been disclosed by the authorities of the various departments.
It is the second time that women employees of the same unit fell sick after inhaling the poisonous gas. It may be recalled that more than 200 women employees, a few of them pregnant, had fallen sick after inhaling a gas on June 3 this year.
On Tuesday, the employees had complained of nausea, stomach pain, cough and some suffocation and were admitted to the government hospital at Anakapalle and a few other hospitals. Some of the women who fainted were treated at the unit, and later they were taken to the various hospitals.
Even two months after the first incident at the unit, the Anakapalle district administration is yet to reveal what had happened at the unit on June 3. The leaders and activists of the left parties alleged the nexus between the district administration and BIAC at the cost of the women workers.
Industries Minister Gudivada Amarnath visited the SEZ and said that the women who fell sick are undergoing treatment at hospitals. Fortunately, there were no casualties in the incident.
