GUWAHATI/SILCHAR: Fourteen people have died in floods and three others in landslides in Assam in the last 24 hours, which has taken the death toll to 62 (53 in flood and nine in landslides) in last 36 days after the onset of this year’s rainy season in the state.
Another eight, including three children, are reported missing in floods on Saturday. The flood situation in this second wave since June 14 worsened further on Saturday. According to Assam state disaster management authority, altogether 32 districts have been hit by this current wave that has affected more than 30 lakh people.

Over 1.5 lakh flood-displaced people have taken shelter in over 500 relief camps set up across the state.
The torrential SW monsoon rains kept the flood situation in the state unchanged as the current second wave of flood hit the Barak Valley on Saturday, five days after it hit the Brahmaputra Valley. According to the IMD, the state has received 147% excess rainfall on Saturday. PM Modi called up CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to take stock of the situation.

“Earlier today, spoke to Assam CM and took stock of the situation due to floods in the state. Assured all possible support from the Centre. I pray for the safety and well-being of the people of Assam affected by flooding,” Modi tweeted.Earlier in the day, Sarma visited flood-affected Rangia in Kamrup district and reviewed the situation.
