PALANPUR: The parents of the infant girl who was buried alive soon after her birth early on Thursday morning in Gambhoi village of Sabarkantha were caught on Friday. Her father Shailesh Bajania was caught near Kadi in Mehsana while mother Manjula was found from Mansa in Gandhinagar district.
While it was widely speculated that they dumped her because she was a girl child, the parents claimed they took the extreme decision fearing that they would not be able to afford the treatment as she was undersize and unhealthy at birth.

Shailesh had lost his job as a farmhand in Gandhinagar district recently and thereafter the couple had gone to Manjula’s parental home in Gambhoi as she was pregnant, police said. However, while still in her 7.5 months pregnancy, Manjula gave birth to the girl at around 6am on Thursday. The infant was found by farmer Jitendrasinh Dhabi in his field located on the Himmatnagar-Shamlaji road near GEB office at Gambhoi.
In the past eight months, eight instances of infants being abandoned to die were registered in the state, five of whom were ‘unwanted’ girls. Quick on the heels of the horrifying discovery of the infant under the soil, who was still alive with umbilical cord attached, police launched a massive manhunt for the parents and caught them hiding in a village near Kadi of Mehsana.
Teams of local crime branch (LCB) and special operation group (SOG) were formed after a police sub-inspector got a tip off about a pregnant women and her husband from Chamunda Nagar of the village missing since Thursday morning. A case has been registered under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 317 (abandonment of child), and 447 against the duo.
