New ICMR guidelines waive off testing of contacts of confirmed Covid cases unless identified as ‘high risk’ | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Amid a steep rise in Covid-19 cases across the country, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Monday issued a new advisory waiving off testing requirements for many categories including contacts of confirmed Covid-19 cases unless identified as “high-risk” based on age or comorbidities. Besides, it also exempted asymptomatic patients undergoing surgical or non surgical invasive procedures including pregnant women hospitalised for delivery, unless warranted or symptoms develop.
“No emergency procedure (including surgeries and deliveries) should be delayed for lack of test,” ICMR said in an advisory on ‘Purposive Testing Strategy for COVID-19’.
It also said that admitted patients may not be tested more than once a week. Besides, individuals undertaking inter-state domestic travels do not need to get tested either.
The guidelines come even as daily Covid-19 tally hovered near the 1.8 lakh mark on Sunday.
According to the new advisory, asymptomatic individuals, patients being discharged from a Covid-19 facility as per revised discharge policy as well as those discharged in line with home isolation guidelines need not be tested.
ICMR said testing can be undertaken either through RT-PCR, TrueNat, CBNAAT, CRISPR, RT-LAMP, Rapid Molecular Testing Systems or through Rapid Antigen Test (RAT).
A positive point-of-care test (home or self-test/RAT) and molecular test is to be considered confirmatory without any repeat testing, the advisory said.
Symptomatic individuals, testing negative on home/self-test or RAT should undertake RT-PCR test, it stated.
The advisory further stated that asymptomatic individuals in community setting, people who stand discharged as per home isolation norms and patients “being discharged” from a Covid facility as per revised discharge policy also need not be tested.
