Sonia joins colleagues in well, protests ED action | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha proceedings witnessed frequent adjournments during the first half on Wednesday when Congress MPs, led by party president Sonia Gandhi, came to the well of the House, protesting raids at the premises of National Herald newspaper in connection with ED’s money laundering investigation and the alleged misuse of central investigative agencies against Opposition leaders.
As soon as the House assembled at 11 am, opposition members protested against several issues, including actions of the ED. Congress members and DMK leader T R Baalu urged Speaker Om Birla to allow Congress’ Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury to speak but permission was not granted. As disruptions continued, the House was adjourned till 12 noon.
When the House met at noon, the Congress president was seen asking Chowdhury to speak on certain issues. As Rajendra Agrawal, who was in the Chair, did not grant him permission to speak, opposition members started sloganeering.
At one stage, DMK member Dayanidhi Maran was seen persuading senior Congress leaders, including Shashi Tharoor and Karti P Chidambaram, to come to the well of the House. The Congress president then stood up and joined the protesters in the well. She was also seen asking Chidambaram to move to the front. DMK members were, however, seen protesting standing at their seats. Amid the disruption, the House was then adjourned till 2 pm.
Senior party leaders don’t come to the well and leave such aggression to the back benchers and the middle rung. Sonia joining her colleagues in the well reflected Congress’s growing indignation over ED pressing ahead with its probe into the alleged National Herald money laundering scam.
Sonia had earlier grabbed the headlines during the confrontation with BJP over Chowdhury’s controversial reference to President Droupadi Murmu. She had then crossed the floor, leading to a sharp exhange with women and child development minister Smriti Irani.
