KOLKATA/BHANGAR: Supporters of Indian Secular Front (ISF), the political party that has a lone representative in the assembly from Bhangar, clashed with police in the heart of the city on Saturday which left the city paralysed for over an hour. As many as 19 cops were injured in the brick batting while agitators were also injured in lathi charge. ISF MLA Naushad Siddique, who was leading the protest, was among 17 arrested, police commissioner Vineet Goyal said.
The mayhem was a sequel to nightlong clashes between ISF and TMC supporters at Bhangar in South 24 Parganas that turned into a pitched battle on Saturday. During the rally, ISF supporters blocked two arterial roads demanding the arrest of TMC leader Arabul Islam for the violence in Bhangar.
When cops tried to disperse the protesters, ISF supporters hurled bricks at cops and attacked with bamboo poles and iron rods. Police said the outpost at Esplanade was ransacked. According to Goyal, the protesters had attacked the cops, leading to the police response.
Earlier in the morning, Bhangar had witnessed a free-for-all between ISF and TMC supporters. Rivals threw bombs, prompting the police to lathi-charge the mob. The front windshield of the ISF MLA’s car was damaged when he reached the spot on Saturday. “They (TMC) also opened fire at us though none of us was hit,” Siddique said. He blamed the police for allowing the clashes since Friday night.
TMC’s Hakimul Islam accused the ISF of trying to terrorise people in Bhangar ahead of panchayat polls. Former TMC Bhangar MLA Arabul Islam staged a blockade against the “ISF attack”. Arabul’s son and local TMC leader Hakimul alleged that ISF supporters ransacked three party offices and set one party office on fire.
